What Love Spells Are, And Why You Should Probably Not Use Them

What Love Spells Are, and Why You Should Probably Not Use Them.

A few months ago, I received a question from a new client about love spells.  What are they?  What can they do?  Could they bring back a man who had left her? Were they safe?  Should she hire someone to do one for her, or do it herself?

Love spells are probably one of the most badly misunderstood elements of magick and energy.  If you watch a children's movies you will walk away with this idea of love magick: "And he fell madly in love with her with the first kiss and they lived happily every after.

On the other hand, if you are more inclined to listen to adult movies than children's fairytales, you will likely feel that love spells work like this; "And the other woman/man was banished forever and they fell back, madly in love.  To spite all odds, love conquered all."

Both of these philosophies on love spells are frighteningly, shockingly, dangerously in error.

To explain why I'm qualified to talk about love spells in the first place, let me recount a little bit of my personal history.  I was born able to speak to spirits.  My knowledge of 'magick' was little to none until I was an adult.  Angels don't really use 'magick' as much as believe that bringing about miracles is simply a part of life.  I put my hands on my grandfather and he was healed.  I visualized my father coming home safe from a war zone, and he did.  I asked the angels for a kitten, they got me one.  Magick was just part of life.

At this time in my life I was introduced to a person who became and still is a very dear friend.  She had been studying magick for years; pagan magick, love spells, and all that went with them.  Partly out of curiosity, and partly out of a teenagers desire to see cool tricks, I started studying with her.

Years later, I know more about love spells than I ever cared to.  I know for example, that there is a GOOD kind of love spell; a love spell that brings happiness, peace, romance, and joy.  I also know that there is a BAD kind of love spell, and that this kind is that type almost everyone is asking about.

This article is about the negative kind of love spells, just to be clear.

Love spells can range from a simple repeating of a poem, to a prayer to your chosen entity of faith, to the lighting of a candle, all the way to very complex multi-day rituals that involve multiple people and huge expense.  Any one of these types of spells can be negative or positive.

So, what is the difference between negative and positive love spells?  It's very simple.  It's something called intention.

Intention is what you mean for energy to do.  Intention goes into everything.  Cooking, cleaning, speaking, eating, exercising...  No matter what you do, you do it with the idea in mind that you want a particular result.  When you bake a cake, you might be expecting delicious chocolate indulgence for yourself, or you might be hoping to impress your date, or maybe your mother-in-law.  Whatever it was that you were hoping that cake would accomplish, that was intention.

In love spells, intention is very important.  Any spell who's direct intention is to bring about the highest good is positive.  Any magick that is intended to bend, break, or influence the will power of another person is negative.  Period.  The rule is that simple.

Angels will tell you that if there is one thing they envy human beings, it is out ability to choose.  Our free will is the things we choose to do. It is not the 'secret' desires of our heart the no one knows about, but what we actively put our enery toward. It is a sacred trust, and it is hugely powerful in manifesting our path.   However, any magick that seeks to take that basic right away, or even abridge it, has dire karmic consequences.

This is why the title says you should probably not use love spells.  Pure intention in love spells is rare, and hard to form.  Think about it; if you are in any situation in a relationship where you are desperate enough to seek magical intervention (and let's face it, in our culture, magick is an absolute last resort), then you are more than likely too emotionally invested in the outcome to have a completely pure intention.

What would be a pure intention for a love spell? You have a right as human being to work magick on yourself, and to ask the universe to bring about the highest good for others.  That's where it stops.

This is why almost all love spells are negative.  If you cast a love spell to bring a certain person back into your life, that is violating their free will.  If they wanted to be with you, they would not have left.  To cast a spell to bring about a divorce between to people is also negative, because if they want a divorce they can get it themselves.  To work magick to make someone love you when they do not already have those feelings is to break their freedom to choose who they love.

One of the hardest things to accept about love magick is that no matter how strong our emotions are for someone, they do not justify us stepping in and changing things magically.  No exceptions.

Now, before you start to think that I'm sounding like I'm judging you, let me tell you about my personal experience with love spells.  I had a man I was very much in love with.  He told me he loved me too, but his actions failed to live up to his words.  I put so much energy into love magick to make him 'keep' his promises.  First of all, even though they worked, I found that I was never happy with the results.  He would shape up for a little while, and then misbehave again.  I was caught in a loop of manipulating him into behaving the way I wanted him to, then getting angry at him for not sticking with that behavior.

But at the same time, I knew in my heart that if he really wanted to behave the way I wanted him to behave, he would do it.  The fact was, he didn't want to.  And not amount of burning candles, begging the universe, or anything else was going to make him be someone other than who he was.

This is the best and biggest reason to avoid love spells.  If you are in a relationship that is bad enough to require magical intervention, then you are in a bad relationship.  If you have been abandoned by someone, then spells will only bring back to you the same disloyal person how betrayed you the first time.  If someone doesn't love you, casting a spell to make them love you will only temporarily give them an emotional high, not build true lasting love.  As soon as the spells wears off, and they always do, that person will be gone.

So what love magick can you do, ethically and without breaking someone's will?

You can ask the universe to bring you your own perfect true love.  You can ask the universe to make your heart ready to receive that love.  Last but not least, you can ask that the universe work for your highest good in love and romance. This means opening your heart to receive the right person, even if that person is not the one you have your eye on. You can also work magick on yourself to bring your desire into alignment with what is best for you, so that you will want only the right person, not the wrong one.

You can do this through prayer, poems, chants, candles, crystals, or whatever resonates with you most deeply.

But when it comes to casting love spells on someone else, it's better to steer clear and leave that person's destiny up to fate.

Asking for your own highest good will almost always bring about longer lasting, happier results for everyone involved.
