Each deck contains a variety of symbols and illustrations that tell a story. The traditional deck is of 78 cards, including a Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. Each grouping within the Minor Arcana corresponds to a related story within them. For example, Cups generally depict a connection with water imagery and emotions, whereas Swords represent some kind of battle, internal or external. Once you start to learn each card's story and its connection to one another, you create new connections in your brain and develop better creative thinking skills.
By learning Tarot, you are using the Method of Loci.
The Loci Method is where you visualize each of the cards with having its distinct place in your mind. This is especially useful when thinking about the Minor Arcana, for you can chunk each group together to make it easier for you to remember. You store the information regarding each card and group in a way that makes sense to you and easy to access. Once you hone this skill in tarot card reading, you can apply it to anything else you want to learn.
Tarot helps you grow your visualization skills.
When learning to read each Tarot card, you are getting more in touch with visual memory and symbolic imagery. You will begin to make new connections and meanings to images you see as you learn the story behind each card and their relationship to each other. Also, visualization takes on new meanings when the cards are reversed, or specific combinations happen within spreads. You will begin to remember how each card interacts with one another and how the combined imagery changes the story.
Tarot enhances your ability to tell stories.
As you learn more about each card, you will begin to understand each card's stories and how those stories change when combined with one another. Being able to tell stories and modify them comes from memory recall and expanding your creative problem-solving skills as well as analytical skills. Using both sides of your brain will always allow you to enhance your memory.
Tarot forces you to revisit the material.
Every time you lay out a reading, you are revisiting the cards and the meaning behind them. Repetition is a critical factor in memory recall, and interpreting Tarot is dependent on excellent memory recall. Even just going over each card repeatedly is a great way to enhance your ability to remember information.
When you practice Tarot, you are learning by doing.
Tarot reading is a practice. It's not something you can do every once in a while. It must be done every day to keep the skill sharp. Every time you read the cards, you are reinforcing the knowledge that you have already learned. You also strengthen what you have learned by doing it again and again and getting better with practice.
