Good Questions to ask a Psychic

The prevalence of people seeking advice from psychics has increased dramatically over the last decade. According to Credence Research, the market for online psychic readings was valued at $800 million in 2022 and is expected to increase to $1.16 billion by 2030. People with intuitive abilities are flooding the market with their gifts, social media content, books, products, and more.

With all this saturation, how can one know who to talk to and what questions to ask? Allow me to briefly explain what a psychic is, what they do, and how to formulate your questions based on that knowledge.

What is a Psychic?

A psychic is a trusted advisor who uses intuitive abilities to help people with their questions and inquiries. Many times, psychics broach sensitive topics with their clients, which means that they need to uphold a professional standard. There is no unified psychic school or training program, so it's up to the psychic to ensure that they formulate a standard based on best practices in counseling.

What a Psychic Can Do

With their intuitive abilities, psychics can help you with topics ranging from relatively simple to incredibly complex. Knowing a psychic's particular talent explains what they can offer you, and we will go into more detail about those talents later. Although psychics' abilities are limited, they can use their manifold talents to help bring understanding and clarity to most situations, including your love life and career path.

What a Psychic Cannot Do

Despite the many gifts and varying talents of psychics, there are some considerations that you should be aware of.

Predict the Future

The future is not set in stone, and our free will has everything to do with the outcomes of our lives. Many will look to psychics for future predictions because they want hope and something to have faith in. There are very talented and intuitive psychics who can make accurate predictions about your future, but their accuracy has less to do with knowing the future and more to do with the quality of their intuition and connection to spirit guides.

Future predictions can be hard to dismiss, especially when a psychic accurately describes an event. Yet, there's a phenomenon called synchronicity, where two or more events occur without any apparent causal link that makes a connection to your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. If you've felt a significant coincidence, you've experienced synchronicity. It happens when an external event resonates with an internal feeling that holds special meaning for you. For instance, if you think about a long-lost friend and then they unexpectedly call you that same day, that exemplifies synchronicity.

This is to say that future predictions function differently than appearances seem. It's important to know that psychics cannot predict the future, but they can tap into patterns of meaningful coincidences.

Provide an Absolute Answer or Truth

Psychics can offer guidance and insight, but you should be wary of anyone who tells you they know an absolute truth or tries to dictate or influence your love life and actions.

Some of the most critical insights and guidance comes through an active dialogue with your psychic. It is a psychic's duty and privilege to tap into your energy and highlight the thoughts and feelings you may be having. When a psychic tries to convince you that you're thinking or feeling a certain way or should think or feel a certain way, they are not acting ethically.

Psychics are not here to tell you what the truth is or what you should think; they guide you toward self-knowledge and help you discover the truth for yourself.

Understanding the differences between Psychics

Psychics often have many different gifts and specialize in certain areas. It is important to remember that not all psychics share the same gifts and talents. Knowing your psychic and their particular gifts is crucial to getting the most out of a reading.

When consulting a psychic medium, ask them about their particular talents, especially if they are listed in a bio, to gauge how they can assist with questions you might have. Establishing this first thing before the reading begins creates structure and allows you to develop a connection with the psychic.

The Psychic's Toolkit

Doing your own research and having foreknowledge of the different kinds of tools psychics use will make your consultation flow more smoothly and create a sense of comfort and understanding between you and the psychic. Below, you'll find a list of different talents and tools with a brief explanation of each one.

Tarot

Tarot cards have an uncanny ability to focus on the energies you bring to the current situation. Most psychics who use tarot cards lay them out in a spread to clarify your questions and concerns. The most common spread is a 3-card past, present, and future spread highlighting the issue or problem, the circumstances that led to the situation or concern, and the outcome if nothing changes.

There are many kinds of tarot and oracle decks; some psychics specialize in a particular unique deck.
Using cards helps you tell your life story—what brought you to your current position and where you can go, knowing your options, including your past life influences.

Astrology

Astrology is a multifaceted tool to help you learn more about the energies present at birth, the present moment, and how they may influence your love life and career path. While considered a fortune-telling and future-predicting tool, it is imperative to note that astrology does not provide definitive answers about your love life. Not predict the future. It can, however, help you recognize the meaningful patterns that shape your life, including those related to your past life, and what to do with those patterns.

Laurence Hillman, an Archetypal Astrologer, says, "If you were sailing a ship, wouldn't you want to know the weather?" Astrology can tell you if you're going to have a rainy period in your life, but it's up to you whether you decide to curl up and hide from the rain or go outside and splash in the puddles.

For a chart astrology reading, you need your birth date, birth time, and birth location. Astrologers use many different systems, but these three details are essential to a natal chart reading using the Western tradition of astrology.

Mediumship

Mediums are people who communicate with the dead and other non-physical spirits. They are some of the most famous psychics, with Edgar Cayce being one of the most prominent figures. One of the first things that people think of when they think of a psychic is people who communicate with the dead, but I want to emphasize that not all psychics are mediums. When you want guidance from a deceased loved one or friend, you'll want to connect with a medium psychic.

Palm Reading

Palm reading is an ancient practice with many different approaches and techniques. Some psychics claim to see the future, and others note different stages of development. In my practice, I look at palms to understand someone's personality and archetypal preferences, which can also relate to their past life experiences.

Chakra Cleansing

Chakra cleansing is typically part of the art of Reiki, or subtle energetic healing. Based on the yogic system of chakras, a Reiki healer will pinpoint areas of the body where energy seems to be stifled or excessive and release the tension to allow proper flow.

The "Clairs"

Most people are familiar with "clairvoyant," which is often used interchangeably with psychic and medium. The word "Clair" means clear, and the different "Clair" abilities focus on deriving clarity from different senses. Many of these abilities are innate but can be trained through intuitive practices.

It is important to note that these abilities can activate with or without the psychic's conscious input, meaning that things can be seen, heard, or understood simply by being around them. If you've ever had a gut feeling about someone and knew something was up, then you're familiar with the experience of having an unintentional impression.

Clairvoyance, meaning clear seeing ("Voyant" having the same root as voyeur and in French voir, which means to see), is the ability to receive visual impressions. Clairvoyant psychics typically report being able to see energies or auras. Many receive visual impressions from the people they speak with and use those to guide their readings.
Clairaudience, meaning clear hearing ("Audience" as in audio), is the ability to receive audio impressions. Clairaudient psychics have a strong inner voice and conscience that guides their intuition. Instead of getting visual impressions like clairvoyants, clairaudient psychics will hear a voice or be driven to say the thoughts that come to mind during a reading, even if they initially seem irrelevant.

Clairsentience, meaning clear feeling or clear sensing, is the ability to receive insights through emotional cues. This is an empathic ability, meaning the clairsentient psychic can feel other people's feelings and understand where they come from and how to guide them. A clairsentient psychic is an excellent choice when you need someone to understand your deep or complex emotions.

Clair cognizance, meaning clear knowing, is the ability to receive insights through logic and intuition. Claircognizant psychics can appear to be using common sense and may not have an explanation for their insights, but their intuition is uncannily spot on, especially regarding your spirit guides. These psychics are best for integrating practical guidance in their readings, giving you something you can immediately implement.
I encourage you to do more independent research into these topics to better understand the history of these talents and practices.

Now that you understand what psychics are capable of and incapable of, as well as the kinds of tools and approaches they use, you're all set to start asking the right questions!

Good Questions to Ask a Psychic

The Magic 5

Some of the most common questions people want answers to include: "Will this person fall in love with me? Will I get offered this job? Am I ever going to hear back from my ex?" Do you notice a pattern with these questions? They're all close-ended questions, meaning they are answered yes or no. The questions themselves are not the problem; their formulation leaves out a lot of powerful questions to ask that could enhance the depth of understanding.

Open-ended questions that start with who, what, why, where, or how offer much more substance and can open a dialogue between you and the psychic. Instead of asking, "Will I find love," a better way to formulate that question is to ask, "What can I do to find love?" When you open a dialogue with your psychic reader, they have more room to allow their intuition to flow.

Yes or no questions lead to deceitful or wishful thinking. A psychic who answers a yes or no question has a 50/50 chance of being correct. Instead of tapping into your energy, this gives you a false sense of hope by telling you what you want to hear. A psychic can confirm or deny impressions as they feel them, but that should come naturally as a conversation unfolds rather than as an arbitrary answer to satisfy a question.

Most importantly, approaching a psychic with genuine curiosity and a desire to learn more about your situation will always lead to better results. Being willing to accept an answer you may not have expected or wanted to hear allows you to get the most out of what a psychic offers you. As a psychic, delivering news and messages that could upset the client can be challenging, but tough love or hard truths are sometimes needed. Of course, these situations should be handled with care and expressed compassionately and with understanding. You should expect this from any psychic reader worth their lick of salt.

With all this said, the list of questions to ask a psychic reader might be:

It's worth reiterating that the best way to get the most from a psychic reading is to go into it with an open mind and expect powerful questions to ask that may arise during your conversation. Have a question or a few questions (remember, open-ended questions work the best!), but be open to different or unexpected topics; the real purpose of a psychic is to tell you what you need to hear.
