I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU THE PERSPECTIVE OF A HAPPY AND LOVING MARRIAGE. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED... I met my soulmate, the love of my life, Scott, several years prior to us dating or getting married. At the time, we were both committed to other people. I met him again when I had broken up with my boyfriend, and we clicked. It started as nightly conversations and then moved into dating.
On our first date, as we were saying good night, he stated that he wanted to be married. I was pretty taken aback and said, good luck with that! Three months later, when he asked me again, I said YES! I learned more from Scott about love, real unconditional/selfless love, than anyone else I have ever met. He did not talk about it much, but he always showed up. Scott passed on in 2012 from a stroke, but he remains my teacher and love from the other side.
Love, real love, is elevating and empowering. Love is inclusive and always bears in mind the feelings of partner/spouse. Love is in the actions, from the tiny ones, like how much foam you like on your latte to making grand events of special occasions. Scott and I celebrated everything. There was something special about each day, and our home was filled with love and laughter to the brim.
Here are some key things I learned from a genuine and loving marriage:
1. You show up for each other every day.
2. You offer a thousand tiny acts of love and consideration.
3. You refrain from name-calling or derogatory terms,'
4. You love and respect one another's families.
5. You are honest in every aspect.
6. You make time for each other. (We had a weekly date night!)
7. You play together! We had a family game night and traveled to interesting places.
8. You talk and work through difficult times lovingly and calmly.
9. You forgive.
10. You say I love you at the beginning and close of each day.
11. You are faithful in body, mind, and spirit.
12. You keep your personal business private and do not share it with others.
13. You give each other permission to shine, grow, and evolve.
14. You break up the chores so that everyone likes what they are doing.
15. You do things together, two people lighten the load,
16. You encourage friendships and have guys' or gals' night out.
17. You are more committed to solutions rather than blame, shame, and guilt.
18. You listen with love.
19. You are respectful, kind, and considerate.
20. You turn off the phone when it is your time together.
21. You work as a team to raise the kids.
Knowing what real love is, having experienced it in such profound proliferation, I choose to be single. I am unwilling to settle for a lower standard! When I find someone of such loving and sincere energy, I will happily commit, for I have the template for a happy and fulfilling (beyond belief!) relationship.
Love, real love, changes the way you feel about yourself (always for the better). When you see that you are loved, valued, cherished, and respected, it raises the bar for how others treat you. Scott used to tell me, "I love you and I believe in you. I love us and believe in us."
This is the reason that I share this at the end of my blogs: I love you, and I believe in you. I want you to know that you are loved, cherished, and valued. It is my sincere hope that you will see how brightly your light shines. This is the legacy of love, and your life gets brighter and brighter.
